Family Room Makeover – Start to Finish

| | |

My family room has been featured in a couple of my posts from last month, you can check out the wallpaper accent wall tutorial here and the TV stand refinish and gallery wall tutorials here.  And now for the reveal of the entire room as well as source links to everything!

I’ll start with a couple “before” photos.  Just your typical builder grade boring-ness.

This was all of the furniture from our previous home in South Florida.  I sold it on craigslist to help purchase our new stuff.

As I mentioned above, the first thing I did in this room was paint and wallpaper the walls.  (The wallpaper from Lowe’s is linked here.)  The paint I used for this room (and for every other room downstairs as well as common areas) is Pavillion Beige by Sherwin Williams.  I found this color through Pinterest and it is the most amazing neutral combination of gray and beige.  I like to call it “greige”.  It’s seriously so perfect for a neutral pallet.  I get so many compliments and inquiries on it.

Obviously I bought the couches right away from Rooms to Go and they can be found here.  I fell in love with the pin stuck style and the fact that they are relatively inexpensive!  The couches came with 4 total pillows and I used them as the forms for the pillow cases I bought online.  I bought them from Caitlin Wilson Textiles, but she no longer carries them in beige.  She does however carry them in navy, coral, and purple.  They can be found here.  She has tons of awesome pillow cases!

Here’s some of the wallpaper process.  If you want the full tutorial read about it here.

I don’t know about you guys, but when I’m out shopping and I see something I like, I use my photo collage app on my phone to put things side by side that I see at the store to the stuff in my house to see how they go together.  It really helps me visualize how it will look.  I saw this blue chair and thought it would work great.  This was the very first blue purchase that would eventually become the accent color seen throughout the majority of my house.  I wanted to pick a very neutral pallet with a few blue accents that I could carry throughout the house to make it all feel connected.  And if I ever get sick of the blue and want to change it, it wouldn’t be too crazy expensive.

I bought the chair from Hudson’s which I believe is a local furniture store.  But I believe they ship anywhere.  The link to the chair is here.  It can be ordered in multiple colors.

I ordered this chandelier from JossandMain.com.  They have lighting events almost daily and this is the one of the most commonly featured chandeliers.  I paid $189.95 for it.  If you’re not a Josser, I suggest you check it out ASAP.  I warn you, it’s addicting!

I wanted rustic looking end tables and I searched high and low for them.  There are tons of sites out there that carry them, but I really really wanted ones that had a shelf on the bottom and weren’t open air.  I also needed them to be as large as possible because my family room is really big and I wanted to fill up the space proportionately.  So with all of that said, I ended up buying the three tables from Ballard Designs.  Let me just say that these were definitely not in my budget, but they were the only company that met my requirements so these were my one splurge in this room.  The cocktail table and 2 end tables all together came out to a grand plus tax.  But you get what you pay for, right?  And these tables are QUALITY that’s for sure. They are extremely heavy, durable, and I plan on having them for a very long time.  At least that’s what I told myself when it came time to foot the bill.  The other cool part is that Ballard sells other pieces of furniture that match these, like desks, shelves, etc.  My dream is to redo my office one day in the same style and get the matching desk and shelves to once again continue the same style theme throughout the entire house.  One day.  Sigh.

As for window treatments, I bought bamboo shades in a really dark brown to tie in the dark cabinets in the adjacent kitchen.  My kitchen has espresso cabinets (tons of them) making the kitchen really dark.  It connects to my living room which for the most part is really light so I wanted to balance them out and I did that by bringing in the dark shades.  The bamboo shades are from Bed Bath & Beyond and the link is here.  I now have them on every single window downstairs and upstairs.  Yet ANOTHER way to continue the same decor theme throughout the house.

The pinch pleat panels are also from Bed Bath & Beyond seen here.  These bad boys are also seen on every single window in the downstairs of my house.  Not to sound like a broken record, but you probably catch my drift about carrying the decor theme throughout.

The lamps are from lampsplus.com and cost $99 each.   I love the “mercury glass” look and I even tied in that look by using curtain rods with mercury finials on the ends from Bed Bath as well.  [[don’t forget your 20% coupon’s y’all!]]

The blue pillow cases came from Etsy shop Festive Home Decor, who also has tons of cute pillows.  I bought them in 16×16 squares, 2 for each couch.

One of my favorite pieces, the mirror, came from Joss as well.  I got this baby for only $90.95 plus shipping.  For the record – a 41″ diameter mirror for only $91 is unheard of!  This mirror shows up on JossandMain.com pretty frequently, so check it out!

The art above the smaller sofa is one that I had in my old house.  It came from Home Goods for about $60 and had the perfect amount of neutral, blue and the dark frame to tie in the kitchen again.  So I decided to keep it and save some $$ on top of it.

The rug is from Lowe’s.  I have two of this exact rug, the other is in my master bedroom.  I paid $199 for each one.  The link there shows $384, but if you go in the store, they will have one that is 8×10 for $199.  I had trouble finding it, but after speaking with the associate I was able to order it through the store and have it delivered to the store for pick up.  I hate spending tons of money on rugs and I swear this one is the best deal.  It’s impossible to find an 8×10 rug for that price.

The TV stand was a craigslist find that I refinished myself to match the lighter, rustic end tables.  Only paid $325 for that $1800 Restoration Hardware beauty!  The collage of pictures above it are from Michael’s during a BOGO 50% sale.  Wait for those sales, people.  They happen all the time.

The rest of the details include a couple picture frames for the end tables from Target, and white hydrangeas from Michaels.  I have since added crown molding to this room and will blog about it soon!  It finishes it off beautifully and I couldn’t be more excited to show you how easy it is!
