$14 Faux Headboard How-To

| | |

Being my first post on my blog, it seems appropriate to blog about my very first “handy-woman” project.  This was over 3 years ago in our first home down in South Florida.  We had finally moved out of our small apartments and I was so excited to have all these bedrooms and couldn’t wait to make an official Guest Bedroom.  Problem was – hubby couldn’t justify spending all kinds of money on a bedroom set that would only get used a few times a year.  Which I kind of agree with  so it was time to get creative!

We already had an old bed frame and I bought a cheap, new mattress from Ikea for $200.  That was literally the biggest splurge for this spare bedroom! I had searched on furniture store websites and google for some cheap headboard options, but I couldn’t stomach paying the prices I was finding for plain, white headboards.  Somewhere in this search is when I came across a few DIY homemade headboards.  And I knew I had to attempt it with the very limited budget I was working with.  My parents had the tools necessary so I would just borrow them and go to town.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

– Molding (chair, small crown, style of your choice)

– Nail gun/finishing nails (or hammer & nails) <—- cheaper option

– Miter Saw (or miter box) <—- cheaper option ($15ish)

– White paint

– white molding caulk

– Painters tape

– Measuring tape

– Pencil

The first thing I did was measure the headboard we had in our master bedroom to get an idea for the amount of molding I needed.  I went shopping at Home Depot and found molding I liked for the outline.  It was a basic trim molding, nothing too elaborate, and it cost about $1.16 a foot.  I bought one 12′ piece (that was already primed white) and it was enough to make the entire headboard.

I measured and drew the outline of the headboard on the wall, taped it off with painters tape and painted it pure white with some white paint I already had around the house.  Here’s what it looked like.

(In this picture there are no baseboards because I was replacing those as well.  I put the new base boards in BEFORE I attached the new headboard)

Next I gave the 12′ piece of molding a coat of white paint.  It only needs one coat since it comes primed.  Then I cut the wood molding according to size, and cut 45 degree corners on both ends.  These are the dimensions I used and the angels cut.  64″ across the top and 47.5″ sides.

Then all I did was use my nail gun and compressor and put 2 nails in each piece, one in each end.  And wah-lah! A $14 headboard.  Here’s the finished product.

If you wanted, you could definitely use a more elaborate molding, or even add boxes with more molding in the headboard to make it look more real or fancier.  But again, this was my very first project so it was simple.  And the best part, ONLY $14!!  Leave comments and let me know what you think or if you have any questions I forgot to answer!

More blog posts on this bedroom coming soon!  If you want to see the entire makeover – stay tuned!
