Family Room Art turned Mirror

| | | |

So I’ll go ahead and start out by saying that I have a problem with wall art.  I can’t ever seem to find art that I love, at least for any significant length of time.  Just like everything else, they go out of style pretty fast.  Especially in my world.  This art I’ve had in my family room is no exception.  I purchased it 4 or 5 years ago from Bed Bath & Beyond for our first home that was decorated primarily in greens and browns, and hung it here in our new house because, well, I couldn’t find anything I liked better.

It’s been hanging in our new family room for over 2 years now and I’m just not in love with it.   Anytime I was out shopping, I always kept an eye out in case I found something I absolutely loved that could replace it.  2 years later and I still haven’t found anything.  That’s when I came to the conclusion that I really just don’t care for wall art much at all.  What I DO love?  Mirrors.  I love mirrors.

That’s when I decided I was going to remove the art from the frame and replace it with a mirror.  I actually really love the frame itself because it’s nice and thick, and I feel that the espresso color helps anchor that side of the room with my espresso kitchen that’s opposite it.

So a few weeks ago I took the picture off the wall and removed the backing by pulling out all the staples with pliers.   There were lots and lots of staples.  In true Lindsay fashion I shattered the glass during this process and had a nice mess to clean up.

I left the empty frame on the wall until I found a place to order a mirror from.  I actually got used to how it looked!

I called a local glass and mirror shop, gave them the dimensions of my frame, and they cut me a piece of mirror that’s a quarter inch thick.  It cost only $30 for a 23″x”31″ custom cut mirror.  By the way, I measured the frame about 27 times JUST TO BE SURE!  I did not want the mirror to arrive and not fit the frame!

I used a hammer and lots of thin 1″ nails to hold the mirror into the frame.  As you can see I placed a nail about every 6″ or so.  This required patience and a steady hand to hammer that close to the mirror without hitting it too hard.

And that’s all there is to it!  I hung it back on the wall and here is the finished product!

I really love my new mirror and I don’t think I’ll get tired of it anytime soon!  In my opinion, mirrors are so classic and versatile, and you can never have too many of them!  What do you think?

  1. Hi LINDSAY. Read your Blog. When you want to get rid of some art, replacing it with a mirror is a great option. Why to waste the expensive and beautiful frame when you can use that for a mirror? Wall mirrors not only add an elegant touch to the place but they also make the place look bigger. The room definitely looks nicer now.
