Aiden’s Big Boy Room Design

| | | | | | |

My plan all along has been to keep just one nursery.  And when Aiden was ready to transition to a big boy room, it would be ready to go for baby Owen.  I figured that Owen would sleep in our room for about 6 months, at which point Aiden would be almost 2 and ready for his big boy room, right?  Wrong.  At 18 months on the nose Aiden decided he was too cool for sleep and definitely too cool for sleeping in the crib ever again.  We tried many methods but ultimately the only one that has worked was having him sleep in the new bed in his new room.  And his new room was not ready AT ALL.  We rushed and bought a mattress and that was all he had.  So needless to say, the process of designing his big boy room that was previously on the 6 month horizon just got pushed to the right this second horizon.

I mean just look at this.  He’s definitely too cool for a crib, right?  Ha.

Below is the room ‘before’.  I’ll be honest and tell you that upon buying this house, this was my least favorite room.  The reason is because of the configuration of it.  The window is off center forcing the bed to be shoved in the corner, and there is a ‘niche’ cutout in the wall to the right of the closet.  I realize I’m crazy and probably the only person who is bothered by these things, but my heart craves symmetry and this room just wasn’t doing it for me.

See what I mean?

But what’s cool is that I was forced to step out of my comfort zone to come up with a design for this room and I think it’s going to be absolutely perfect.  In fact that niche I thought I hated, is now going to be the perfect space for some shelves and a toy box I’m building!  And the bed being shoved in the corner is actually quite necessary so my toddler doesn’t fall out of it!

Here’s the other side of the room where I’m going to put shelves and a toy box.

So I wanted to come up with a room design that was somewhat outdoorsy for Aiden.  He absolutely loves nothing more than being and playing outside.  I was browsing Pinterest and came across a couple woodland themed bedrooms that I loved.  Here is my favorite one that inspired most of his room.

This room was designed by Laura from One Thousand Oaks for her adventurous little boy.  Isn’t it so sweet?

I created a design board to plan out what I was going for and here’s what I came up with:

So here are the details on what you see in the design above:

  • The pine trees.  I saw them on Pinterest and set out on a hunt to find them.  As in, I HAD to have them.  I ended up locating them on Etsy and they are STICK ON DECALS from StudioWallDecals here.  I have the 3 extra large tree.  Aren’t they super cute?!
  • The green dresser.  This is going to be a craigslist find and repaint job by yours truly.  Remember the one I did for Aiden’s nursery here?  Basically like that, except green.  I will dedicate an entire post on it when it happens 🙂
  • The floating shelves.  These are going to be built by me using the Shanty2chic floating shelf tutorial.  Because they are completely adorbs.
  • The pendant light fixture.  I am hunting for a green one, but finding one as large as I want is tricky.  I will also dedicate another post to this because I think I came up with a good DIY 😉
  • The rug.  It’s from pottery barn teen and when I saw it, it was love at first sight.  Its 5×8 in navy.
  • The curtains.  They are from Bed Bath & Beyond here.
  • The bed.  Another build by yours truly and another post dedicated to it.  I will be using the ana white reclaimed wood headboard tutorial.
  • The pillows.  The 2 navy ones are from Caitlin Wilson Designs here.  I had 4 of these in a neutral color on my couches for years and thats why they may look familiar to you.  I love them so much I decided I wanted 2 in navy for Aiden’s room.  The green and deer ones will be from Etsy I think.
  • The toy box (not pictured).  Another DIY build coming at ya!
  • The art above bed.  Again, I saw this on Laura from One Thousand Oaks design and have no idea where it can be found so I am going to make it.  With a post included on how 🙂
  • The bedding.  It’s the gray and white herringbone from Beddys.com and I may or may not have a love affair with it.  It’s AMAZING for children because it completely zips up and is an all-in-one.  Meaning the fitted sheet, the flat sheet, and the comforter are all one thing that zip up together.  So theres no sheets falling off and it’s completely easy and doable for kiddo to make their own bed.  WIN!
  • The mirror.  One of my favorite Target items in their 62 collection and it’s found here.

I think that covers everything!  What do you guys think of the plans for Aiden’s big boy room?? I am so excited to start sharing these projects with you because there are SO MANY!  Comment and let me know your thoughts or questions, I love hearing from you guys!

  1. Oh my goodness! This is such a cute room design. I have two little boys (4 and 2), and they would go crazy for this! Those trees are awesome! You did such a great job tying all the elements together; I can’t wait to see the final product! Have you seen this lamp? https://www.rosenberryrooms.com/613-fly-fishing-pole-floor-lamp.html?pp=1 It would be super cute with that theme. I considered it for my boys’ room b/c they LOVE to fish, but it’s kind of pricey. We did railroad-type lanterns instead. Just thought I would share for more inspiration. I love your posts and your beautiful home, and I can’t wait to see more of it!

  2. Fantastic as usual! Can’t believe he’s ready for his big boy room already! Can’t wait to see the finished room! 💕

  3. I love it! I can’t wait to see it all finished and I am excited to see all of your blog posts. I am in the process of updating my 2 younger boys room and it’s all greens and blues. My son, Owen, loves green and my other son, Emilio, loves blue. I am going to be painting a dresser too, but I am thinking of a combo of blue and green. I got it super cheap on facebook Marketplace (here in Tampa) so that may be another source for your dresser search! I totally get your comment about symmetry, it boggles my mind when there is a window in a strange place or crazy bump out. It looks like you are definitely making the best of it!

  4. I like it! I really love that green! The dresser is cute too. The only thing I’m not sold on is that niche area. I have seen one before and they had a shelf across the space to use it as a work desk (for adults) so instead of the toy box, I have two ideas. One would be to have something lower with a little chair so that he could play and sit at his little desk. You simply install the shelf lower and make it like a little table for him. You could even cut /slice a tree and use that as a little stool (something similar to a tree stump) that can go under the desk. That way everything is tucked out of the way. ( As he grows, the shelf moves up.) The second idea I had was to put/make a fort or a tent/teepee or something like that that he can hide in. You can make it like a train car and have maybe some drapes or something coming down from a lower shelf that he can hide inside there. Kids love to hide so I don’t know, I’m just thinking out loud. The point is it’s a little hidden space just for kids. The only thing I don’t like about toy boxes is that there’s no organization to them. It’s basically a box to throw all their toys in and that bothers me. I like things to be really organized and toy boxes seem more like a dumping ground. I’m sure whatever you do will turn out beautiful. I just love that emerald green color and that outdoor theme.
